this is my first time handling an HD cam and i recently bought a z1u. i know that in HDV its automatically set to shoot 16:9 and SD is set to 4:3. is there a way to get SD to be recorded widescreen?

Yes, there should be a menu setting for switching between 4X3 and 16X9 SD. It's in the manual for sure, so that will point you in the right direction. Also, there is a large Z1u forum over at DVinfo.net if you wanted to learn more about picture profiles and camera tweaks and all that jazz.
If you want to get up to speed quickly on the Z1U, you might want to get this DVD.

Welcome to HD. The Z1 has a special place in my heart as the first tiny camera that I never wanted to throw through a window.
While I still prefer a full size camera, the Z1 is a really nice tool for the size & price. Although it needs a lot of light which really stinks if you've been using a newer 2/3" SD camera.
