How many of you guys/gals have the photog's name included in the lock-out of your packages, and or CG's giving the photog credit? eg. "With photographer John Smith, Joe shmoe KAAA news 1" A simple yes if you do have it, and no if you don't would be fine. Thanks.

KOTV in Tulsa includes "Photojournalist John Smith" type keys if the package was shot and edited entirely by that photographer.

My old station WBRE/WYOU in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA did include the Photographers name as a font as long as the reporters included it with the other chyron info and times. Some reporters did, others couldn't be bothered to do it(too hard to put and makeup and remember who made you look soo good in your stand-up.....just kidding, maybe.)

The shop I am at now doesn't, but I kinda accepted that I would not always get the credit the reporters and anchors get when I became a photographer. It doesn't really matter that much, just as long as I still get paid, I don't need on-air credit.

I don't really mind not getting credit, most times. I also accepted the fact that anchors and reporters get the credit. I don't really need it. But at the same time, it would be nice every now and then. Especially when you do the entire package by yourself, do all the interviews, and the reporter, who wouldn't come in early to go out with you, sits back at the station and just voices it. It would be great if sometimes in those situation we could just do a nat pack, but we couldn't. That was at my last shop. Here, it's not that bad.

Photog credits--Wow, what a concept. Only that
sure doesn't help pay the bills.
Here's a revolutionary idea---pay parity with
reporters. Most managers see the folks who bring
the "vision" to television news as "shooters",
crew guys, or worse--they see us as glorified
field hands. But they never think about what 4 or 5 minutes of TV News without pictures is really like.
Now, of course, we'll get the "reporters are more
important than photogs" debate. Ya know what, that's just plain stupid because in TV ya need
both or you've got nothing.
'Nuff said.

Actually, a GOOD newscast can be put together without one reporter! BUT, if you put a newscast together without photographers, it's radio...

"hey I don't want my name on this POS!".
"tough luck lensboy, maybe next time you'll bother to white balance and take the sitcks out of the trunk".

But seriously folks,
We have been giving photogs credit in the sig outs for ten years and I think it's just fine.

WHBQ, memphis has photog supers that run in the front end of all pkg's.

i used to push for on air credit...now i don't really care, for the most part. in my short 3 1/2 year career, there have been 2 times where i honestly think i should have where i didn't.

1) shot an entire pkg by myself, including interviews, came back, wrote it for the weather guy....he voiced it, i cut it, and he got the congrats when it turned out great, but he was humble enough to refer everyone who patted him on the back to me (which i did appreciate a lot)

2) late breaking news on a sunday night...no morning show, but whatever. small town fire about 45 minutes away, but it's downtown, they've called 3 other fire departments, and they're running out of water. get up there, shoot for half hour or so, the fire's out, get some interviews, came back, cut a natsot from it, wrote up a script for the natsot...only to have a reporter front it for our midday show, with my script, minus my name.

other than that, i've pretty much given up.

I've been given a credit once... It was a very visual story. I didn't mind it. I actually with it would happen a little more often on good vid paks.

there was a big debate about this subject on this message board recently.
I worked at a station once where it was required in all PKGs. Then a new ND came in and killed it.
When we sent a crew to Iraq, the photog was mentioned in all the sig outs.
"with photographer______, I'm reporter-boy in Iraq"

I'm not so much concerned with getting on-air credit when it's due, but more of a "good job on that pak" from management when that's due. I really don't care if joe-schmo viewer knows that I shot and edited the town board meeting pak. When we hustle and get the story and make it shine on-air, we should get the recognition from our superiors that the job was done well.

In my 20+ years I have never heard it called a "lock-out"

Sig-out... yes
tag... yes

but "lock-out"... no

Anyways if you want to be known or "famous" go to the other end of the camera. Most Photogs want to remain anonymous thats why we do what we do... its not for fame, glory or money.

If you want your nome sadi on TV become a reporter.

And have I been under a reock fo rthe last 20 years? Or is calling it a "lock-out" just strange?
