WFAA photog show

Last night (sun, 12/28) WFAA, here in Dallas, aired an hour long show called Photographers, featuring some of the shooters and editors working there. I did not see the whole thing but the format included selected photogs introducing some of their stories and giving background throughout. It was a year end type of show with a lot of "behind the scenes" info on how the stories are assigned and completed.

I thought the show was done quite well. I was wondering if this is something that is done every year? Are there other thoughts about this show from WFAA'ers?

Any other stations out there do something like this?

KCNC in Denver did the same thing. Year-ender and review of the big stories thru the year. FOX 31 did the same also. :)

I work at WFXT in Boston and we're putting together a 1/2 show in Febuary. Its going to be all nat-sound pieces produced and shot by our photogs. All of the stories will have a music theme so that the show has some continuity. I think its great that there are stations out there that give their photogs exposure like this.

Let us know how the ratings are for these programs. Who is buying the spots in these programs? What time are they airing?

KUSA also did a year ender called "Faces of Colorado", and it focused on stories done throughout the year, and the people who define Colorado.

The WFAA photoshow isn't really a year end show. I don't believe it's ever been promoted that way. In fact, it's quite unique.
First, it's actually produced by 3 of WFAA's photogs. They're the ones that bounce ideas around and choose the format. Other photogs throw in to help, but it's those 3 that put it all together.
Second, they do use stories from that year... most of the time. But they have run stories from past years, usually so the photog can give the viewer some inside info about it. For example, "it was -40 when we shot this", "the tiger then attacked me", or the ever popular "the crowd then beat me to the ground" story. That brings me to the third thing.
The show includes alot of behind-the-scenes kind of stuff. Busted stand ups, busted cameras, bloopers, all the stuff that the public never sees on the air, but might find interesting. Once, they followed a photog around for a day and used pieces of that story to get in and out of commercial breaks. The viewer not only got to watch his day unfold, but got a good idea of what it's like to work in television news. They even put together a story on the engineer who has to fix all their busted equipment.
Sure, the show includes some great stories but the glue that holds it togther seems to be the humor and insight of the people that viewers don't normaly see. Photogs don't get promos and if you do it's usually the back of your head or close up of your lense.
What WFAA has done is give the Photo staff their own outlet to do what they want, and it works. Numbers for the show have ranged from 2 to 9 (I haven't seen all the numbers) it depends on the time slot and what you're up against. Once it was run against another stations actual news cast won!
I'm not sure who you'd have to call to get a copy, but if you like that kind of show, it might be worth a look.

Anyone old schoolers out there remember Miami Hotshots from WTVJ? I called them every year they did the show and got a dub. Really cool, especially for back then. We often talked about doing that at my then station but it never came together.

There is no way in hell our station now would do such a show.

Thank you pirate news for all that info. It is really encouraging to hear about what a couple highly motivated photographers can produce, even in these crazy TV times. I wonder what those guys had to do to persuade the higher ups to give them an hour of prime time on a Sunday night. It would be nice to see something like that in more places. especially on cable news channels with all that time they slaughter. Yea, I know it's wishful thinking.

I hope a lot of people watched the show so that they understand our work day is not really 1:15 long.

Happy New Year everyone

I happened to catch the 'FAA photog show and really enjoyed it. Nice job guys.

The Kuwait/Iraq segment was outstanding. It gave the viewer a real appreciation for what was happening there.

I wish I had those tough shoots with the supermodels to deal with. Nice touch turning off the radio on Alan the deskie.

And I'm glad to see Wild Bill made it out alive from the wildfire.

Late,

Sounds like it was a great show. Sure wish we could do something like that at our shop. I wonder how hard it be to get a copy of the show ? Glad to hear someone in the news gets to use their talent. Have a great 2004.

I think the CBS in Harrisburg did a photoessay show as a year-ender...with the photog's introducing their favorite photoessay of the year. I don't remember how long it's been since they did it though.
