Occupy ethics

I was sent down to Occupy Wellington to get some "they are still there" shots.
Introduced myself to them so they know why I’m there.
Was told "You can’t film here mate we don’t trust you bull****ing bastard’s."
As I’m thinking of a way of telling them it is a public place so tough bickies without starting a fuss he said "it might be OK to film if you make a donation."
???
"Put some money in the box and you can film."
Stalling as I tried to think about the moral and ethics involved I said "I’ve only got 20cents"
"That will do then."
Felling very uncomfortable I paid, telling them it was on behalf of me personally not any media organisation. Got my shots and left.
Still not sure if it was the right thing to do, it was only 20cents of my own money to make my life easier, but… what do you guys think I should have done?
