A fellow b-roll member tells me that he may have seen a posting from other members that have successfully done a similar purchase, but neither one of us can find anything on this subject inside the forums.
Do any of you have experience – good or bad – that you can relate? I need to rapidly rebuild after a total loss from fire, and I have no indications as to when insurance funds are coming through. It makes the prospect of discounted gear tempting.
I’m aware of the issues with ‘gray market’ purchases – the most notable being that any manufacturer warranties are not going to be honored in the US. I’m prepared for that risk. My perception is that at the point we moved away from tape based machines, to much more solid-state design, the risks were significantly lowered. The unit I am seeking out is the PDW-F800 (XD-Cam).
