For the last five years or so I’ve been doing some crewing for ESPN and other large clients, wasn’t by choice, it started as they could not get any decent crew on their own and they asked me to help. Last year was a record year with over 100 crew days. Most of these gigs were for multiple cameras shoots. That was probably also the last year for crewing as all producers are now equipped with a camera package and they are now the second camera on two cameras shoots.
Predictably as the news got around that I do crewing I got inundated with calls from shooters looking for work. I tried to look at all email that I get and particularly at the many and many links to demo reels I get, if nothing else I get to see what’s going on outside my areas of expertise. I got to be real good at looking at demos, it takes me 5 seconds to click off the site and move on to the next one, most are not worth over 5 seconds of my time. This is why I wrote this little article about demo reels and what myself and producers that I spoke with on the subject would like to see.
