Looks like the new AP Stylebook is cleaning house and going towards more neutrality. Some conversational terms like "ethnic cleansing" and "Islamophobia" are going away.
From their website: "Q. We are wondering why AP style just changed to discourage use of the word "homophobia." Can you please explain the thinking behind this switch? Thanks – from Eureka, Calif. on Mon, Nov 26, 2012
A. Phobia means irrational, uncontrollable fear, often a form of mental illness. In terms like homophobia, it’s often speculation. The reasons for anti-gay feelings or actions may not be apparent. Specifics are better than vague characterizations of a person’s general feelings about something."
