Got an editing question. I own two digital recorders — a nanoFlash and a PIX240. Usually when clients request a particular editing codec I just dial it into one of these boxes, copy the files onto a hard drive and deliver the material. To be honest, my ignorance regarding the more intricate understandings of editing codecs and editing systems (Apple and AVID) has led to some simple but fixable screw ups using these recorders. And I have learned a lot from my rare mistakes over the past year all the while wincing when a client informs me of an "issue" and hoping they can transcode and correct it. I HATE to make mistakes — absolutely hate it. But my knowledge is pretty shallow — I understand .mov and mxf files (kind of), and I certainly understand frame rates and resolution rates. It’s in some of the things only an editor knows where I can get confused.
I have an editor asking specifically that material I shoot for a particular project be recorded using DnxHD145, an Avid codec. he also has told my client that he only owns a P2 card reader and that if I transfer files and deliver them on a hard drive that I will need to format the drive for a PC, not a Mac.
Okay, so I can record DnxHD145 using the PIX240. Can I also do that with the nanoFlash? Using the nanoFlash on this project is attractive because it’s smaller and more conducive to hand holding. But I can go with the PIX240 if that’s problematic.
I own a Mac. I don’t own a PC. I cannot format a drive for a PC. So how do I make a transfer from the solid state drive (with the PIX 240) or CF card (with the nano) to a drive that I cannot format properly?
Does anyone have any insights or ideas on any of this? Thanks in advance.
