“a hero of the camera”

June 8, 2013 photog blogs

traubGoing through some old film-related magazines and I came across this full-page ad that Pathe News paid for in memory of one of their photogs, Charlie Traub.

I’ve written in the past about what happened to Charlie. He was the second news photog to die in the line of duty in the United States and apparently the first to be memorialized like this. Then again unlike “Shorty” Randolph, the Seattle-based Hearst newsreel shooter who was killed two years earlier, Traub’s death was witnessed by dozens of his colleagues. Randolph’s was witnessed by just a road construction crew and Paramount News photog George Lancaster.

Both of them, no one remembers their names anymore in the collective memories of their profession…a curious and sad fate that the march of time brings. Traub however was finally recognized once again by his fellow journalists not too long ago. Randolph though, remains a forgotten footnote in history.
