The first generation of news photographers to work out of Seattle gathered together up at South Cle Elum, WA to document the opening of the final segment of the electrification of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway on March 5, 1920.
Will E. Hudson of Pathe News is at the far left. Alex Singelow of Fox is second from the left with his sticks shoved through the “keep off lawn” sign. Charles Perryman of Gaumont is fourth from the left and Theodore G. “Shorty” Randolph of Hearst International Newsreel is fifth from the left. The still photographers were not identified.
The crews are long gone along with the “keep off lawn” sign and the railroad itself, but the electric substation still stands along what is now a hiking trail.
