New Year’s Day I had to work. That might be a crummy thing, but I kind of actually enjoy what I do.
That doesn’t mean I enjoy the twinges of sadness I feel for missing out on the time everyone else gets to spend with their family.
Working in news, I just have to look at it as taking the bad with the good.
I’d already been to two stories. First a guy had caused a big police incident when he was seen with what looked to be a weapon on his balcony.
Turned out to just be a BB gun. That’s not illegal. Maybe just not real smart.
Later, the desk sent me to Glendale to cover a shooting. Turned out to be an accident. I was skeptical, but the cops at the location didn’t think it was in any way intentional. They probably had some details they didn’t care to share with me, but it didn’t matter.
It was close to 7:00pm and I was called back to the station to hop in a SAT truck and sent to a fire that was threatening structures in Orange County.
The dirt road in the pictures above are just how remote the area was that had been burning.
It took me a couple of hours, but I made the trip down and was ready to put some news on TV– but wait! Both the crews that were already in the area had managed to get microwave signals linked in.
It felt like ten kinds of bad luck of the draw. Oh, well, at least I got to see the OC and IE bureaus at work.
No SAT shot for me.
A little overtime and a nice contemplative drive back to the station was how I started my brand new year.
Awesome.
