BeFrank, The Race for Board of Supervisors and My Life in Politics

No, Paula Poundstone isn’t running for LA County Board of Supervisors. She was “headlining” a fundraising event in Brentwood last week.
I was there with our Political Reporter Dave Bryan. That’s our beat. We cover politics for CBS2 and KCAL9.
I never made an official announcement about it, but I’m currently assigned to work with Dave. Whatever story he’s on, I’m shooting it.
That’s cool with me. I volunteered for the opportunity. Heck, I practically begged for the opportunity in fact.
Dave and I have been on the road together quite a bit and after our two week stint covering the political conventions last year, I suggested they partner me with Dave full time.
They told me it wouldn’t happen. Seems I’m too valuable a resource to lock into just covering politics.
That changed mid-December last year. (Hey, anybody remember Zelda from the “Dobie Gillis” show? That’s her in the pic above. She’s running for Board of Sups.)
I can’t go into detail on my blog on why things changed. All I can tell you is the opportunity was presented and I jumped at it.
(The next two shots are of another candidate in the Sups race, Attorney John Duran. We actually had to knock out three interviews for the story in one day.)
My job doesn’t change much. I still do what I’ve always done.
Shoot interviews, edit, set up the live shot and put a reporter on TV.
I’m less likey to be involved in a high speed chase or celebrity shenanigans, but just as likely to be pulled to run our satellite truck and will likely still be on the bigger breaking stories if it involves traveling, natural disasters or maybe the Pope?
My job is now a little less action, but still quite the adventure.
There’s a certain amount of satisfaction that I’m getting from working on stories that seem to carry a little more weight.
Politics might not bring in the viewers the way a high speed chase just sucks people in, but the content of a political story can have a much greater impact on the lives of our viewers.
Dave is a respected reporter and I’m just glad my skills and ability can add something to what he does. Dave also does what he’s always done.
He covers politics.
For the time being, as long they let me, I’m covering politics too.
(Do I need to mention that Santa Monica Councilman Bobby Shriver is a member of the Kennedy family?)
