I just started a job as a nightside photographer at a local TV station. I really love the job so far but some nights I only have one thing to do and a lot of free time. I am wondering what I can do to be helpful around the station. How would you want your photographers to help without getting in the way?

Also is it acceptable for photographers to pitch and shoot stories by themselves? What are some good ideas that I should start with?
