By now most of Lenslinger’s readers probably have seen his post about “Sam the Cameraman.”
Well a little bit of information on the nearly pants-less photog that Pittman lovingly mocked on his blog in order to do a nearly forgotten name a right.
Major Sanford E. “Sam” Greenwald, United States Army Signal Corps was one of the first men ashore on Normandy Beach on June 6, 1944. Unlike Robert Capa, you likely don’t recognize Greenwald’s name (or the other cameramen who were on those beaches that day for that matter), but his footage you will.

And to be fair to history, other newsreelers who joined the Signal Corps during WWII and shot footage of Operation Overlord also included John Bockhorst, Jack Lieb, Jessie Sabin and Bob Blair.
As for Sam Greenwald, he eventually went on to work for CBS News.
