Every era has their cliche kicker stories. Well in the newsreel era, the classic cliche story was beauty contests.
Digging through British Pathe’s archives one comes across this example edited for British theater audiences dating from late 40s titled “Photographers Select Miss Press Photographer 1948” that was shot at the NPPA’s annual convention in Atlantic City.
And as I noted in a previous post a few months ago about the raw footage of that event, Ed Nold of the Detroit Times was the still photog who is seen being body-checked into the pool. I have no idea which Pathe newsreel photographer shot this, though there were a dozen suspects who were lived within driving distance of Atlantic City and were also NPPA members.
And to point out what would be a major ethics no-no today…the nats you hear in the newsreel are fakes that were added in post since Eyemo’s can’t record sound.
