Media Access & Shield Laws by state

May 4, 2012 forum topics
I’d like to solicit some help from as many of you who read this as possible. I’m working on the chapter on law/legal matters in a textbook I’m co-authoring. Federal law and California laws governing media I know. But I also know that each state has different rules/regulations governing media access to police/fire scenes as well as having/not having shield laws.

So – what I’d like (with thanks in advance) are the penal codes/designations and brief summary for as many states as possible.

For example – in California PC 409.5 (d) states that "nothing in this section shall prevent a duly authorized representative of any news service, newspaper, or radio or television station or network from entering the areas closed pursuant to this section."
The shield law is encoded in Article I, section 2(b) of the state constitution and California Evidence Code section 1070. Summarized: in civil cases protection is absolute but it varies in criminal cases.

Be glad to answer any questions in regards to this if you have any.
