Speaking from the crossroads of my career… I just thought I’d ask which would be a better choice between shooting or sports.
Sports= This is what I went to school for, and is how I got in the biz.
I did four years of college, two internships. Approaching my seventh year of shooting HS football, third of shooting for Texas Tech. I’m returning as A.M. Sports producer for our Morning Show (mainly fueled by encouragement on their end). Even turned in a couple of packages of my own.
If I were to go primetime, it probably wouldn’t be here. Their approach/philosophy is night and day different from mine. On top of that, upper management and myself are not really BFF’s at this point.
Storytelling= I’ve been a news photog since 2006, and didn’t catch on to the whole aspect of good storytelling until last summer. After then I’ve learned all I could… Whether it be b-roll.net, FB, NPPA DVD’s, Books (Freedman and Tompkins), Charles Kuralt DVD’s, and catching three Video Workshops online (2010 and 2012 NW Video, 2011 Poynter). It also include phone calls with other photogs across the country.. (One of which is on here).. My work is night and day different than it was 12 months ago. One nat sound package I did last summer even got me a Texas AP.
I’m sure some of you guys say a previous post asking about live shots. Last months, I got my first taste in years… Much of what proved to be immensely stressful. So much, I got moved to a different role in the mornings. I just worried if I moved on to a larger market, that’s all I’d be doing.
I just thought I’d ask around here as to what would be the ideal road to pursue… Aside from the typical "Do what your heart desires!" post, I just wonder which would make the most sense. I know the sports option would likely involve a market-drop, but I’d be cool with it. I just worry about not having the right voice to get my foot in the door..
All input is welcome!
