Aug 1 : Thirty-six years ago in 1977, photographer George Spears of KNBC dies in a news helicopter crash along with pilot Francis Gary Powers in Encino, California.

Aug 2 : Forty-five years ago in 1968, reporter-photographer Steve Pieringer of KRLD dies in a Dallas hospital from his injuries after being burned over the majority of his body in a gasoline tank explosion the previous day. He was standing less than 50 yards away from a burning gasoline service station in Kennedale, Texas, filming the firefighting efforts when a 5,000 gallon storage tank exploded, engulfing him and others in ensuing fireball.
