Thinking about selling my P2 gear

October 29, 2013 forum topics
It has taken me a while to get back to my old clients after returning to the Dallas/Fort Worth market.

I have been primarily P2 or HDV/DV for clients. However, I noticed that XDCAM is quite popular, with the EX3 and F700/800 being the main cameras called for, otherwise if it’s Panny, it’s often an HDX900.

I am getting back in the circle of trust with CBS and about to get my foot in the door with more networks, possibly even NBC. I have been primarily doing corporate and some news for AP and other international clients, so P2 has been fine. However, I noticed that most freelancers for ABC and CBS, and on a lot of other shoots have primarily been shooting on XDCAM, either the disc or card based cameras.

I never get specific calls for my HPX3700. I HAVE gotten asked for a PDW700/800 or EX3, or an HDX900. I want to sell my HPX3700 and probably my HPX370 as well and switch over to a PMW400. I don’t want to buy a 700/800 because the discs will eventually get phased out by cards and newer technology, and I don’t want to buy a tape based camera like the HDX900 because it is way too late to invest in that technology IMHO.

I am also thinking of just selling the Varicam body, keeping the lens, getting a 400 and keeping the 370, therefore offering P2 and XDCAM options to clients.

Just seeing what your thoughts were here folks.

Thanks!
