JLOP -vs- Hollywood Boulevard (Summer 2014)

June 23, 2014 photog blogs
(No, you’re not crazy.  Wait, well, maybe you are, but this post has actually changed since it first appeared on the blog.  For some reason, this post got screwed up and I had to take it offline.  I’ve gone back and worked on it, so let’s hope that I fixed whatever was the problem with it.  I was playing with making some of the shots b&w and I also added a couple of pictures.)
We shot photos in Hollywood last night.

Even though I had the opportunity to attend a studio meetup where there would likely have been models willing to pose, it would have been a solo adventure.

Sure, there would have been other photographers at the meetup, but I chose instead to organize a last minute expedition to Hollywood Boulevard.
Having not been out shooting with my friends in a few months, it was nice to get together with some of the regular crew.

Wait, before I get too far into things, we saw Andy Dick and I think I’m the only one who got a shot of him.

It’s not as if I haven’t photographed a celebrity before, but it’s pretty rare to just stumble across one while shooting on Hollywood Boulevard.

At least, that’s been my experience. Your mileage may vary.

We’re no strangers to Hollywood Boulevard.

We’ve shot it all before, but I’d recently gone through my archives and found that after a little time, my assessment of my work had changed a bit.

Yeah, maybe a lot of my work didn’t totally suck.

I’m joking, but I can be kind of hard on myself at times.

So, it’s been worth it to go out and try to get better after all.

One of the things I noticed was how few faces I actually captured.

I made a conscious decision to engage and photograph more people.

That’s one of the things that I think my work has been missing.

It’s not a complete fundamental change in how I approach shooting stills, but it’s something I could improve on.

At the end of the day, I think I made the right call in hanging out with my friends.
When we first started getting together, I wanted to push ourselves to try to get outside of our comfort zone.

Let’s say, we’ve succeeded in that.
It’s no longer much of a big deal for us to shoot pictures on the streets of Hollywood.

This weekend, it might have opened up new doors of opportunity if I’d gone to the other meetup.

Instead of pushing myself towards something new, I hung out with friends and just enjoyed doing what we’ve always done.

This time, that was enough.

We’ll look for the new experience next time.
