It Happened Tonight

In the past, I’ve been involved in a debate on this site about using your own gear when you are a staff photographer. I have a stationed issued Panasonic HPX370 but I keep my Sony NX5U with me as a backup. Some say that’s ridiculous. Maybe. But tonight it saved us big time. Long story short I had shot with my 370 all day with no issues but when I pulled it out at a breaking news standoff, something happened to the camera that I can’t explain. None of the XLR audio inputs (front and back) would work without severe static. I tried hard wire mics, three different wireless units, but nothing was working. In the end I had to ditch the 370 and pull out my personal Sony NX5U to cover the story and do the LIVE shot. Without it we would have had nothing.
