DAY 2

April 8, 2002 5:50pm PT
Back in the hotel room...

I now know what time it is... it is time to stop walking.

There is something about taking in NAB. The walking kills you. There is so much to see, and so many toys to play with. None of it seems to be close together.

The first day served as a chance for me to acclimate myself with the main convention hall, meet a few vendors, and check out some of the latest equipment.

Scott Keyworth of Anton/Bauer showed off their newest product. The DIONIC battery fits all cameras and equipment that use the famous A/B "bricks" but is smaller, lighter, and holds more juice. The only drawback is they aren't as indestructible as the bricks.

Lars Ohman of Sweden showed me the Easyrig. A cool invention I've seen in magazines but never tried. A "shock absorbing" cable redistributed the weight of the camera down to your hips. It looks a little different, but it was comfortable for a sore tired back.

How's this for compact and stylish looks in a live truck. This DSNG truck is a "fly-away" system installed in a Mercedes M-Class. You open up the back hatch to find all the transmission equipment. Cool for those shots up in the mountains.

I was surprised the first time I saw a full size sat truck in the convention hall, but imagine my surprise to see a fully outfitted chopper indoors. US Helicopters brought the former Chopper 9 from WCPO to show off their FLIR Cam helos.

Now we're getting ready to meet at the Monte Carlo Brew Pub. I'm ready to sit back with a brew right about now.

The crowd at the Monte Carlo Brew Pub. From Left: Mark Rosenberg, Vegas local; Danny Dodge, inventor of Lo-Bar; Joe Savino, Engineer at WTAJ; Bob Schmitt, network freelance shooter.

Many great stories were shared, a huge 5 liter "tub keg" was tapped, and everybody had a great time. Thanks to everyone who stopped by. In the far right is Bryan Tulwits, WVEC sat engineer.
